Are You Mobilized For Mobile-First Indexing?

We’ve blogged before about this, but Google is now placing priority on mobile sites on their search engine results pages. A new study conducted by BrightEdge illustrates how important being ready for Google’s new focus on indexing really is. According to the results, 57% of all web traffic is on a smartphone or tablet. In addition, performing the same search on a desktop and a smartphone leads to a different rank 79% of the time. What does this mean? Well, you need to start mobilizing for mobile-first indexing.

How Do I Know If My Site is Mobile?

You can always talk to your company that built your site. Or, just pull it up on your phone. If you see a miniature version of your desktop site, which means you need to resize with your finger and thumb and navigation is difficult, then you don’t have a mobile site. You should see a cleaner design with a hidden menu (meaning it sits behind an icon, usually three horizontal lines).

Do I Need a Brand-New Site?

Google’s focus is user experience. Since more people use phones than desktops to search online, improving user experience means giving priority to sites that are responsible. Hence, the onset of mobile-first indexing. Now, if you have a non-responsive website, what should you do? Well, if your site is recent (built in the past three years) then you may only need an update or a slight redesign. However, if your website is older (three to five years) then you may consider a complete redesign.
