At MDPM Consulting, we strive to stay on top of the latest news and changes from Google. Recently, Google made a major change to the way they showcase news. “In The News” debuted in 2014, presenting users with different news stories from multiple sources. Now, they have added “Top Stories,” which uses a style similar to note cards to present trending stories, or those relevant to a search. What does this mean for you?
In The News vs. Top Stories
According to this article from Moz, Top Stories dominated news on Google almost immediately. The three stories that are presented in card form make up 78 percent of Top Stories results, while the list of articles below the cards accounts for 22 percent. Simply put, In The News is on its way out for good, and Top Stories is now becoming the major news gathering resource on Google. While the majority of the results come from reputable news sources, there are still plenty of results that direct people back to less-than-reputable sources.
What Does This Mean for Your Practice?
At the moment, this has no impact on your SEO or dental practice. But since this is gathering quite a bit of attention online, especially in light of the nation’s focus on the “fake news” epidemic, we thought it prudent to cover the change. However, should this have an impact on SEO or rankings, we will definitely let you know!
