Should Your Web Design Avoid Certain Colors?

mdpm colorWeb design is one of the most important parts of website creation. After all, we tend to make a snap judgement on webpages. Literally. In fact, people can judge a website in as little as two to three seconds. In order to ensure your website is pleasing to the eye, and inviting to potential clients/patients, you might consider avoiding certain colors.

A Few Tips on Color and Web Design

  1. Warm Colors Excite: What atmosphere do you want to reflect? Warm colors such as red, orange, and yellow, tend to excite people. Therefore, if you’re targeting a younger audience, you may consider using a warm color palate.
  2. Cool Colors Calm: If you want to highlight a relaxing atmosphere, then consider employing cooler colors such as blues and greens.
  3. Avoid Pure Black: Did you know that pure black does not exist in nature, and it tends to disturb the eye? If you want black, try employing a dark grey instead.
  4. Avoid Christmas Colors: Do you know who wears red and green? Freddy Krueger. That’s no accident either. Director Wes Craven chose those colors because together they are hard on the eyes because they sit far from each other on the color spectrum. Avoid red and green. What’s good for a maniac dream stalker is not good for your practice.
  5. No Neon: Unless you’re using an artistic medium, neon tends to strain the eyes, and can make your practice appear more like a Lisa Frank fan site rather than a professional practice or place of business.
  6. You Can Be TOO Bright: Your color palate should blend brighter and darker shades. Too bright can be overstimulating and make reading and navigating your site difficult.
  7. Watch Your Headers: Light on light makes headers hard to read, as does dark on dark. Instead, light letters on a dark background, or vice versa, can make your headers easier to read and more attractive to users.
