So, you want your website to show up at the top of search results? You’re not alone. Ranking high on SERPs (search engine result pages) is hard to do, which is why you must use SEO techniques and best practices to remain competitive in your industry. This much we know.
In June of 2015, some of the smartest minds in the SEO industry gathered to geek out about one thing: SEO ranking factors. One of the biggest takeaways of this meeting — called SMX Advanced — was this: As SEO has evolved over the past decade, one thing holds true: User experience is everything.
Intent is at the root of it all.
Remember last week when we talked about Google’s algorithm Hummingbird, which originally rolled out in September of 2013 to combat keyword stuffing and use user intent as a ranking factor? Well, it turns out Google was onto something, and — according to Niel Patel, who is the co-founder of KISSmetrics — “today, you must start with the user’s intent, and allow that to frame your SEO approach.”
To do this, Patel recommends that thinking more about the user’s intent and less about keyword targets when trying to optimize a website page. Think about what questions the user is asking, what information the user needs, and what the user’s main purpose in searching is. By answering these questions and connecting these questions/answers to your topic, the correct keywords will naturally show up in your content.
It’s all about providing value to your target audience when they want it. Answer their questions, do it well and naturally, and they’ll keep coming back for more because the information they find will set you apart from your competition.
Pair this tailored, valuable content with sleek, functional website design and you’ll turn website visits into direct marketing action.
