Who Owns My Google+ Page?

Recently, we encountered an unusual issue. We took on a new client who was transferring from another company. In response, the company, who offers local search and website services for dentists, refused to give the client access to their own Google+ page. They claimed they had the right to do this, as the Google+ page was their “intellectual property.” Is this true? No. That’s why we’re posting this blog today, to let you now that nothing could be further from the truth. So… who owns your Google+ page?

Who Owns Your Page? You Do!

As a business owner you have a lot on your plate. As a result, many successful practices hire others to operate their social media pages and web presence. However, these people are not the owners of the account. Google owns the page and you have rights to access/update it. The people who have been hired and tasked by you to operate the page are managers. As the owner, you have the right to access the passwords and login information, and if you see fit, transfer to another company. Don’t let a company bully you, or attempt to claim your website or social media accounts as their “intellectual property.” This simply isn’t true. In fact, you can contact Google if someone else has verified your business, or refuses to hand over admin rights.

Know Your Rights

At MDPM Consulting, we work with our clients to build their websites and social media pages, and also to operate them. However, at no point do we own those pages. They are yours, and if you wish to transfer to another company to manage your web presence, we will provide you with all of your files and login information. Keep in mind that all reputable companies will operate like this. You should not be “renting” your practice’s website. When looking at a content/marketing company, ask a lot of questions and know your rights!

If you would like to discuss building a new website, we can get you started, and discuss your rights as the owner of your website, and social media accounts. Send MDPM an email: info@mdpmconsulting.com, or give us a call: 972-781-8861.
